The Fierce Little Mint with a Bold Legacy
Low to the ground and rich with minty fire, Pennyroyal has long been both cherished and cautioned. Known in the old herbals as a woman’s ally and a warding herb, she carries the bold clarity of mint with an edge of mystery.
Traditional Uses
In ancient European and Middle Eastern traditions, pennyroyal was used as a digestive aid, insect repellent, and emmenagogue—a plant that could stimulate delayed menstruation and support the body in releasing what was stagnant. It was often employed in cases of cramping, colds, gas, and sluggish digestion, and it held a powerful place in folk magic as a protector—burned to ward off illness and evil.
Common Uses (with caution)
Though powerful, pennyroyal must be used with great care. It is not safe for internal use during pregnancy or in high doses, due to compounds that can be toxic to the liver in concentrated forms. Today, she is most often used externally or as a low-dose infusion by experienced herbalists for her antimicrobial, expectorant, and stimulant properties. In traditional medicine, she has also been used as a steam, foot soak, or topical wash.
Energetics
Pennyroyal is hot, dry, and intensely moving. She dispels cold and damp conditions, breaks up stagnation, and encourages elimination—physically, emotionally, and energetically. She is a mint with muscle—clearing fog, warming the womb, and stirring the stagnant.
